Color Grounds (2020-21)

More on Color Grounds:

  • It is no question that my work is dominated by subjecting the landscape. It is important to me still to this day and acts as a powerful muse for my work. However, the drive to express myself honestly, began to exceed the limits of traditional, recognizable, landscapes.

For Color Grounds, the subject of landscape was started, then buried and covered up, typically undiscoverable by an unknowing viewer. The works gave me a chance to think about landscape existentially, and interpret my emotions through atmospheric painting techniques and effects.

I consider this a pivotal point in my career as I took on a new approach to painting. Through this work, I was able to manipulate the surface of paintings through adding and subtracting material to express my emotions. I accomplished this abstractly, through color fields, atmospheric qualities, and different paint thickness.

We all experience life in unique ways, and I’ve created these paintings to communicate my own life experiences; through images that represent my emotions through an altered, or weathered, perception of physical environments.
